Suen Feng Loong was a team created solely from a close-knit group of friends and family. The intentions of the three captains was to merely bring together a group of people to have a good time, and hopefully, win a few medals and trophies along the way. However, to our surprise, our creation of a team not only brought together people, but also revived the long-dead CDBA college division of dragon boating.
As a result of our early on selection process for members, S.F.L. is mostly comprised of undergraduates from a variety of colleges, such as, University of California: Davis-Berkeley-San Diego, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, SF State, City College of San Mateo, City College of San Francisco, and Skyline College, Academy of Arts San Francisco, while some of our younger members come from Abraham Lincoln High School. As time has passed, our ranks, passion for the sport, and achievments have grown. Yet, true to our intentions, no matter where we place, we encourage each other to have fun and to try their best during dragon boat racing events, both on and off the water.
Suen Feng Loong's racing history begins from September 2003 to present. Dragon boat practice, for this team, begins in mid January until mid November. The team practices hard every Saturday and does double duty (Saturday and Sunday) practices a few weeks prior to a competition. Suen Feng Loong’s season comprises of three to five competitions that are spread out in the months from May to November.
As the dragon boating sport's popularity increases, we too hope that our team's membership increases. Our plans in the future are to still maintain our college team, but in addition, add other boats into our ranks. These other boats will contain our paddlers that have graduated from college, but who still wish to paddle with our team; in short, it will be our "adult boat". Therefore, we have now opened up our team roster to include any interested paddlers, no matter the age.
When we're not on the water practicing, our team likes to get to know each other better through our team socials. Usually held at least once a month, we make plans to get together in order to have some fun off the boat (and see what people look like when they're not in their paddling get-up). Some events that we've done in the past are, but not limited to, rock climbing, ice cream socials at Ghirardelli Square, camping trips, volunteering at the food bank, and much, much more! And as always, we're open to suggestions and looking for new things to try out.
